Open Letter to Seventeen Magazine

To Whom it May Concern:

While I haven’t had a subscription to your magazine since I was in my teens (presently in mid 20’s), a recent Facebook post from a friend has driven me to write this to you. Angered by a recent article of yours, and after seeing she wasn’t the only one,  she asked us to participate in a letter (…)

Lana Del Cray

Seriously. Who can resist big hair and liquid eyeliner?

Alright. So recently I’ve been getting really into Lana Del Rey. Like, really into her stuff. I realize I’m a bit late to this party, but I’ve been absentmindedly skipping and thumbs-downing EVERYTHING of hers on Pandora for over a year, and then at some point found myself listening to “Born (…)

Happy Birthday, Roe v. Wade! (My present is a wake up call)

It has been 41 years since the landmark Supreme Court decision to make abortion legal in all 50 states. So while this is a great day, right now I’m thinking about some issues with Roe and the way we approach the issue of abortion.

One of the best workshops I attended at the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Summit was called “Complicating (…)

Let’s Talk About Sex!

That wasn’t just to get your attention, y’all. The title of the day-long workshop I went to before the Sexual Freedom Summit officially began was “Let’s Talk About Sex; Love, Legislation, and Leadership Institute.”

*Yes, months later, I’m finally writing about it!

The workshop was led by Monica Simpson, the Executive Director of SisterSong, the Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective.  I (…)

Joss Whedon is still the best.

So amazing. And he even affectionately calls out Katy Perry for her silly “I’m not a feminist, but I believe in the power of women” nonsense.

It’s no wonder that I’m getting words he’s written tattooed on my body at some point in the next year, but that’s another story for another time 🙂

Woodhull Sexual Freedom Summit

Whew! The last few days have been absolutely amazing. I was in DC for the Woodhull Institute’s Sexual Freedom Summit. The goal of the conference was to affirm sexual freedom as a fundamental human right. Over the course of four days I participated in many different workshops, listened to so many inspiring, intelligent people, and frankly learned a lot and (…)

Cutest video on menstruation ever made. Period.

Baha I couldn’t resist the “Period” pun. But yeah, this video is awesome.

Girls shouldn’t feel embarrassed or ashamed when they get their periods, they should feel empowered and excited!

My parents got this memo years ago, apparently. I was 13, and mortified. I was babysitting at the time and my mom had to drop by and give me my various options. (…)

New word for your vocab!

Gynotician: a politician who feels more qualified than women and their doctors to make women’s health care decisions.

So much awesome. But seriously, these people who think women can’t make informed decisions for themselves? We need to vote them the eff out.

A Little Bit of Hope

So, I’ve been pretty upset these last few days after the Zimmerman verdict. On so many levels, the entire thing is devastating, and from a personal standpoint I’ve felt really disheartened seeing so many privileged statements from some of my friends on Facebook.  I seriously, and perhaps naively was completely dumbstruck when I found out about the verdict. I felt (…)
