I’ve made an unapologetic video with my commentary and thoughts on posts I saw on social media in reaction to Robin William’s death, depression, and suicide.
I feel strongly about this, and I was pretty nervous at first as you can tell in the first few minutes; this was something I didn’t want to wing or take lightly. Despite apprehension, I felt it was necessary to make this for a few reasons.
If you are someone who has made judgmental and ignorant comments about people who have committed or contemplated suicide, you need to be a more empathetic human. At the very least, you should bite your tongue because when you say those things, whether to an acquaintance or posting generalizations on the web, you are actively hurting people.
People struggling with that are obviously going through a rough time, and thanks to a stigma surrounding mental health issues/getting help, you don’t know who most of them are. The numbers suggest 1 in 10 adults in the US are suffering from depression. Don’t reinforce the stigma, and don’t push people who are already down. Chances are a good friend of yours is struggling; don’t you want to be someone they feel they could talk to?
If you are someone who is experiencing depression or suicidal thoughts, I PROMISE it can be a rough road but it can and will get better. Find help, there are resources out there! The number for the suicide hotline is 1-800-273-8255.
Thanks for watching.
