So, ever since Pope Benedict the XVI chose to resign last month in a historically shocking move, the world has been waiting with baited breath to see who would be chosen next. Or, some of the world anyway.
For me personally, I’ve just been doing a lot of eye rolling. I tuned out a few weeks ago when I was listening to NPR and this sentence actually happened, “Now, the important thing though is the shoes. He will no longer be wearing red shoes, but a pair of custom made brown shoes he received when traveling through Mexico.” Is this Project Runway? Are you serious? Do you think Jesus gave a damn what color his shoes were? Did Jesus even HAVE shoes? And I digress. The whole thing seems overly ritualistic to me, and fairly hypocritical. In the bible Jesus said “it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven,” and we’re sitting here talking about a man who lives in a castle and whose footwear is breaking news.
Anywho, I was at the nail salon today when the announcement happened. The nail techs were pretty pumped and in between lecturing me for cutting my nails too short they were all talking excitedly about who the new pope might be. I was biting my tongue because of course I’m full of cynical comments.
And, drum roll, the new pope is revealed. Jorge Mario Berglogio from Argentina will now be the new pope, taking on the name Francis. Now, it is very rad that this is the first pope to ever be chosen that ISN’T from Europe, and that he hails from the continent with the most Catholics on the planet. However, it is also very sad that after all this time he is the first non-European to be chosen.
Also, while it’s great, come on! They HAD to pick someone who broke the mold in SOME way. The Catholic church has been accused of enough in the last several years that they really couldn’t afford to pick another old white guy.
Moreover, it’s not as if anything is really changing. This man is still anti-abortion, anti-contraception, anti-gay marriage, anti-gay adoption, I mean really, the only thing I can hope for over Benedict is that this one hopefully doesn’t safe harbor child molesters. I really can’t be kind about this.
End cynical rant. I’ll be sure to balance this out with something more uplifting soon 🙂
